Do you have a budget? Or just cheap as possible?
£100 gets you a pair of Avid Juicy 3's, which for the money, are very good. I run these on my bike with a 185mm rotor up front. I'm a big lad too and they're good enough for me. I'd prefer them to have the bite point adjuster found on the Juicy 7 model and above, but for the money, i cant complain.
If you've got a bigger budget of around £200 and over, then you can take your pick of the best out there.
A few riders on here run Hope Mono M4 upfront and Hope Mini on the rear. Very pimp brakes and i don't think any them would have anything bad to say about them. Your looking at over £200 for these though
Formula brakes are getting good reviews at the moment. They're apparently the most powerful brakes around. Formula k18's will come in at about £200
A recent MBR brake test was won by the Juicy's (be it the Juicy 5, but they're no different to the 3) beating the Formula k18 and Hope mini.

Cheapest i've found Juicy 3's at are £100 at ChainReactionCycles, then you'd be looking at £40 fitting and at least £20 for a headset service! You might even get a bit for your Julies on eBay

well im assuming they will give me the Julies back so i can flog them on. The front one was fine and the rear needed TLC but could get working. I assume they were 60 quid each and they fit for free if you pay the RRP. They would have knocked 12 quid off if i just wanted to buy them. As for my headset its just a new bolt needed inside as it had come loose and couldnt be tightened. He said they would just add on 3 or 4 quid for the bolt so im guessng all up ~£125. Im well happy i found cheap Juicys though, thats what i wanted in the first place!!
One question. Because of the headset incident its made me think of what else i should personally give a going over? Ie Pedal bearings or cracked tyres etc. Anyone got a list that they think would be good for like a personal mini service i should do. As long as it requires standard multi tool use, a bit of grease / lube / degreaser im willing to have a go. Should i regrease my hub bearings or is that a bit too technical for me?
Cheers
