But then we are health freaks!

Just a bit more quantity of my normal diet, If its a long ride I try to eat pasta the day before and I do take bannana and the like with me. To be honest I find that what I eat during the ride makes far more difference than what I eat before hand. If I'm out on a bike for more than an hour without something I will bonk. Remember I come from the old cake stop days when an energy bar was from Mars.. If I accidentaly have a fried breakfast too soon before riding I just do an involuntary bulimia session after the first big climb :-) To avoid this in public I pre empt the situation with two fingers.. don't worry I weigh just under 14 stone - I'm not in need of treatment for this! If I know I'm going to be out for what *I* call a hard run/walk/ride whatever I try to avoid beer for a day or so before hand, mainly 'cos I cant just have one or two so I end up wasted I've recently tried taking these cereal bars with me, made by most of the big breakfast food makers and they seem to do well for me, and they don't melt.....

I wouldn't bother with the eating and just take a few tinnies of Stella with me! ;D I wouldn' eat anything too big and close to a ride otherwise you'll just be sick. Just take something with you to replenish as you go along, banana, energy gel/bar, chocolate etc. You can always have a bigger meal (reward) afterwards.

Just don't eat a meal within 2 hours of the ride. The banana gives a quick burst energy, but a bowl of porridge would be better as it will release energy slower throughout the ride so will be of more benefit than the banana. You'll do better to eat a banana part way round the ride. The only benefits of the coffee are to help you wake up and to increase the metabolism (raise the heart rate), which won't be needed as you're exercising anyway, which will have the same effect. I normally take a couple of cereal bars or flapjacks, for slow energy release and a banana for a quick "energy-injection". And plenty of water. At least 500ml for each hour of riding.

I'm in the same frame as mind as Xybadog really - banana or flapjack halfway round does me I hate riding on a full stomach. I actually prefer morning rides as that way i'll never have anything more than a bowl of cereal or a few rounds of toast inside me. Although before CYB last month i was tempted by the McDonalds at the services (Blame FTASB for being so late) And regretted it the whole way round the MBR

Wanting to binge after a decent ride is natural. You've just got to be sensible. The best thing after a ride is protein, preferably within half an hour of finishing the ride. It's great for repairing your muscles.

st739 - I use protein powder after gym. Just make sure you don't make it up before the ride. ftasb - I enjoyed the McD's too but could feel it trying to do an about turn for the first 20 mins on the ride
