I've been fishing around on tinternet for a new rear mech to replace the one i mashed on the Marin forum ride. I'm going for the same mech, the cheapest i can find it is on Wiggle (sorry Martin) for £34.49 delivered (£31.04 if i get my basket over £50). Linky - WiggleI think my current mech was the long cage version, i'm thinking whether i should go for the medium cage this time. How will this affect my setup? Also, is it worth spending a bit extra on a decent chain? The one Curley give me is SRAM PC53. I couldn't find it online so i had a fish around and apparently the PC53 is an old PC951. The chain that went pop on me was a SRAM PC971, retailing at £18. Is it worth spending a little bit more so save a lot more hassle?

The shorter the mech the sweeter the shift. On one of my old bikes I had a short cage XT mech and it was lovely, I suppose theres less chance of it making its way into your spokes, Have you checked them by the way?
Ive got the SRAM PC991 chain on mine, (god knows what that means like!) cost me around £20 its got a power link and Ive never had any probs with it.
You have to get your basket over £50 on wiggle its the law! ;D I would look at getting a replacement mech hanger, didnt yours get a little bent?

Good point mate, not checked the spokes yet. I might go for the medium cage then, sounds good to me. This might sound daft but do you have to alter the length of the chain? Yep, the mech hanger is fooked as well. I can't believe how expensive they are for what you get. I've been looking around online and they're all around £15. Have we got any engineers on here that could knock out some cheap mech hangers

Yeah you will have to shorten the chain accoringly, wont be a lot though.
Im going to get a replacement mech hanger as a spare for out on the trail.
I hope your spokes are ok, I do actually feel sorry for you, youve not had much joy with that bike have you?

If you run a triple chainset up front, then Short and Medium cages wont work - They're designed for single or double chainrings. Nick: If you still have all the bits from your broken chain, you can work out how many links you need in your new one. If you've chucked it - Count the links on Dave's 5

You can run a medium cage ok, but pushing it with a short. Spoke to lad in my LBS today about it.
I ran a short ok all them years back though.

I think i might just stick with the current setup and go for another long cage version but start riding with my eyes open to avoid rocks, etc, that could mangle it again ;D
