I find that my lever Joplin performs really well and just saves the ballache of stopping at a set of jumps or technical trail.
I overcame the reliability issues by fitting it with a condom* from new. About seven rides in now with no issues whatsoever! On a really wet ride a Crudcatcher saves it somewhat also.
* Condom is technically just a cutout from an old DH innertube that I cable tie around the top of the post. It's about 7" long and saves any water/grit from reaching the shaft or seal. Happy days.
