Riding position, crouched over? Stem too short? seat too far back? the possibilities are endless, not really sure why flats or SPD's would cause a back problem as your foot on either flats or spd's are at the same height/position etc but i aint no expert.

If you have canged a component on the bike or changed the riding position, then that could be the cause. If you have had an absence from riding then that could be the cause. Have you increased the amount of riding now the suns out? Stretching after excercise, especially as you get older is advised. Or maybe you should excercise your back muscles, for strength.

It's definitely to do with your riding position and what you might carry on your back. SPD's (much as I like them) will not help at all. In fact if you don't set them up correctly it can even worsen things by giving you sore knees or hips too Mynnydd is definitely right about one thing - are you riding more, if so it may just be tired muscles. Have you started carrying stuff on your back, or added more than what you normally do? This could also have an effect. I know this is more "maybe's" and "possibliy's", so the best thing, if you are still unsure, is to go see your doctor.
