The rear wheel on my hardtail has an XT hub. I noticed today when I got home from work that the rear wheel was really loose. I only cleaned, regreased and rebuit it a month or so ago. My FS has XT hubs front and rear. Since I've started riding again after the snow they seem to need tightening up every month or so because they keep coming loose. (I've been getting the same on my road bike which I was putting down to the "cheap" Sora hubs but I'm not sure now). When I tighten the cones I do them as tight as they will go while still turning freely by holding the outer nut while slackening the inner nut to lock the two against each other and there is no play. I do them up pretty tight, am I not doing them tight enough and they are coming loose? Am I doing something wrong way totally? (It's how I've always done it before) Are my hubs just totally worn out?

When was the last time you changed the bearings? And how often do you service the hub? I used to hate cup and cones spend so much time playing with them and there is always something wrong :/

i have xt hubs, (775) front is fine, the rear 775 hub is a weird one off design, uses 3/16th bearings, large axle, comes undone a lot, you really have to tighten the cones up, very tight and maybe use loctite?
and after the last rebuild the freewheel was coming undone, which feels like the cones are loose, when they are not
if you have the 775 model, you need to tighten the freehub bolt, and that used a 14 mm allen key, AND use loctite
worked for me, so far. saves getting a new wheel

The road one had the bearings changed just over a month ago when I replaced the freewheel - so that's about once every 12 months. FS is only just a year old so it's not had the bearings replaced, just cleaned and regreased (they are still shiny). Hardtail ones had one side replaced about 18 months ago but the other side are still shiny so not replaced for ages - could be the problem ;D Usually tightening it all up fixes it for a couple of weeks... Might give that a go see if it helps. after the last rebuild the freewheel was coming undone, which feels like the cones are loose, when they are not[/quote] I don't think it's the freewheel, the wheel actually rocks from side to side when you're holding the bike up and the cogs don't seem to move when I poke them ;D

my rear wheel rocked about 5/6 mm each way, rebuilt the hub twice, no difference
then i noticed when the hub was in bits, there was a fair bit of wobble in the freewheel, the freewheel bolt was loose, but only about 1 turn of the bolt
worth checking, but only if its apart, i might be wrong tho

worth checking, but only if its apart, i might be wrong tho Certainly will. It shouldn't be the freewheel but like you say if it's in bits anyway...
