Hey,
I'm mid giving my bike a good clean etc due to having dislocated my kneecap about a month ago, and having had my leg in cast since then I can't go biking, or pretty much anything for that matter.
So I'm wondering can I put a coil sprung rear shock on my Giant Reign (it's not an X) it currently has a float but I find that the float is too soft bottoms out too easily, and if i put more air in it my bike bounces around like a hard tail.
Any ideas?

That sounds a bit strange - not something i've ever hear of with an air sprung shock!! Are you sure a service wouldnt improve matters? Maybe its just dried out around the seals etc?? I fully serviced my forks this summer and found a huge improvement to their performance after refilling with fresh oil and replacing a couple of damaged selas www.foxracingshox.com/fox_tech_center/service_videos.htm

Any ideas? Kieran does sound odd, is it the shock that came with the frame? i,e is it the correct length? and as pointed out by mr port when did it last get serviced?

You could always get you existing shock tuned, speak to Tftuned or Mojo and see what they can do. For example fitting a smaller air can will make a shock ramp up quicker near to the end of it's travel and resist bottoming better.
Fox Vanilla shocks are narrow in diameter, but I guess that a lot of coil shocks are now coming with remote resrs that may cause clearance problems on your frame.

Yeah maybe I'll get it serviced, it's off my bike at the moment whilst I am replacing the bushings. In terms of how long ago, I don't know I bought it with the frame on eBay a long time ago, so yeah before shelling out on a new shock I'll go for that!! Cheers for the advice.

Are you doing high jumps on shocks that aren't made for such abuse? Next thing your frame might crack. Check the one third travel when sitting on the bike.

Not overly, I'm mainly (when not broken) doing things like the Marin, Penmachno, Degla, with the odd bit of DH thrown in (not going nuts though at all) just like Moel y Ci missing out the big jump/drop offs. Been up to a couple of the Seven Stains, the only DH I did there was Make or Break at Inners, which isn't overly harsh to the bike.
Think I'm gonna get the shock and the forks serviced by Mojo whilst I can't bike, next month though as it ain't cheap!
