Following a quick blast around the red at Llandegla on saturday, I stopped at the cafe, got off the bike and sat down at a table. I reckon 20, maybe 30 seconds AFTER getting off the bike, BANG! The tyre exploded! I was running with inner tubes, at 30psi, there was no weight on the bike, what on earth happened?! The side walls of the rear tyre are completely shattered (WTB Velociraptor), as was the inner tube. There were no sharp objects or anything in the area and the bang was LOUD. I am completely stumped by this, anyone know what caused it?

Just as well you weren't riding the bike that would have been scary

I've had this before when a small part of the inner tube was sticking out under the bead of the tyre. Pumped it up, put bike on the bike rack on the car, no weight on the tyre, went inside and a few seconds later there was a huge bang outside like someone had been shot. Just make sure when you seat the tyre on the rim that the inner tube isn't trapped.
Quite impressive that it took the tyre sidewall out too though - could be that you had a tear in the sidewall with inner tube sticking through?

Happened to me during a road event last year, I was stationary taking a drink and the tyre blew out, I thought i'd been shot! I discovered later that there was a small hole in the tyre, so I must have come to a rest at an angle allowing a stone or sharp object to push through the hole in the tyre and pop the tube. At the time I thought it was a sniper in the hedge!

Same happened to me a 2-3 hours after I'd locked my bike up outside work.
Tyre was a Kenda Nevegal with the tube at around 35 psi.
We all heard a massive explosion and assumed it was kids messing about. I only realised at 6 when I went out to go home.
I'd only had the bike a couple of months and not had a puncture on it so hadn't touched the tyres. Alf Jones gave me a new (shitty) tyre for free.

Sniper !!! Hehe you'd be amazed how many people said this, someone shouted it as soon as it went off ;D Quite impressive that it took the tyre sidewall out too though - could be that you had a tear in the sidewall with inner tube sticking through? I guess that's a possibility yeah, I doubt it would've been from the tube sitting dodgy in the tyre though as I've had it set up for months and it's been fine, but as you say maybe a hole had developed but I can't imagine how! Overheated rims on V brakes did it for me going fast down hill scaaary!!!!. Now on discs Yeah despite running discs I checked the rim etc and it was all cool... so weird! Maybe it was your wallet imploding after being in One Planet?! Ha! No that was after buying a new tyre at the shop! Oh and a burger. They do good burgers.
