Vans for me, I couldn't think of anything worse than being 'joined' to my bike in a big crash. I'm starting to think twice about keeping my spd's on when I get on the trails. I noticed they were great when climbing, because your feet don't move so there's more energy forced into the pedalling, but I had to try and unclip at each switchback coz that's when you slow down and probably a good chance of going off balance. I had to laugh ;D ;D, but I probably shouldn't as it may yet happen to me, but I went up the very first small incline from the car park at LLandegla, and a group of 5 lads were behind when I heard a clatter and a groan. One of the 5 had only come off (with flats) at the very first switchback virtually still in the car park (those that have been will know where I mean). His mates were wetting themselves. I didn't laugh though coz I had a way to go as I'd only just set out myself. I didn't wanna get too c0cky.

Its a bit Marmite this SPD/Flats debate, you know, you either love em or hate em.
Theres noooo way I could go back to flats, I found that on really fast rocky sections my feet moved round too much on the flats and I never had a solid foothold.

I bought myself some SPD shoes and pedals last year, but after quite a comical fall (Think a sideways fall from a stand still, being unable to unclip : Haven't used them since. But i agree with what Martin said about flats not giving you a solid foothold on a rocky/technical sections. .....Although i a decent pair of grippy pedals can help.

I was looking at these in the red/black in Wiggle. They want £63. 3 weeks will go pretty quick. By then hopefully we'll have some good weather.

Hope so . i wanted the red abd black but these were a bargin, the good thing about these pedals is that every part of them is replaceable unlike some flats which only have a limited life and once they are trashed they go in the bin. They have had great reviews so ive got hgh hope for these
