As a novice, I was surprised yesterday at Llandegla, how many people I saw wearing running trainers. I also noticed them in the Snowdon photos on this forum. Are they widely used as opposed to cycling shoes? If so, anyone able to recommend a decent pair for cycling? I'd prefer to wear them than my cycling shoes, if it's "the done thing". I'd even get rid of my spd's for some flats. I'm asking you guys as you have more experience. Unfortunately, none of my mates are into biking so I'm a bit of a biking loner

You wil probably find that the ones wearing trainers are running flat pedals, oggy wears trainers when he's out. At a guess trainers offer better grip on the pedals and you can nearly wrap your foot round the pedal to get grip, if you know what I mean? trainers have a lot more flex than SPD shoes so at a guess you probably feel more at one with the bike.
I wear SPD's myself and to be honest I wont go back. I had to use flats out in Cyprus while waiting for my replacement SPD's to arrive and I hated it!
Ask oggy about his SPD experience!! ;D ;D

I hate spds, I hate spd's I hate spd's ;D. Incase you hadnt guesed ive had some bad experiances with spds and I like to jump about a lot and do a lot of dabbing when riding downhill trails. I use skate trainers like DC's or vans but this winter I will be looking for a more waterproof alternative. Skate Trainers offer excellent grip on flat pedals.

Being SPD soles won't they be a bit too stiff though?

Nope they have a trainer type sole compared with the more race designed shoe that have solid plastic based soles.

Thats what im thinking. Im fed up with having cold wet fit when riding in the winter so in preperation for next winter im going to be on the look out for a decent pair of shoes, the shimanos are look favorite at the moment but ill see what else I come across.
Was also thinking of getting a pair of seal skin socks for next winter.
The skate trainers are brilliant for summer tho ;D

I've not been unlucky enough to fall off because of SPD's...yet! I'm sure I will soon enough. I can say I think they helped me at Llandegla yesterday though. I'd be interested to try it on flats to see the difference.

I thought that id break myself in easy when i tried spds.
I went for a bit of a road ride, but not being able to help myself i tried to jump off a little ramped bit in the pavement next to a main road, one foot came unclipped as i pulled up on the pedals but the other stayed clipped in i went arse over tit with the bike attached and landed in the road. I really hurt myself both knees were cut open badly as well as one elbow and I hit my head real hard on the road, very lucky there wasn't a car there.
To add insult to injury on the bloody ride home i pulled up at the local marina for a breather where i saw a group of about 7 really tidy young girls, i pulled up near them to get a better view (yes i am a perve ;D) but forgetting i was clipped in i fel side ways and ended up lying on my side still attached to the bike, it took a minute of wriggling on my side to get unclipped before i got up red faces then promptly made my exit ;D
Thats why i ride in flats ;D

I loved my spd's untill I went to coed y brenin and kept falling off on the technical bits. It all depends on the ride now.
