How old is your cassette because sometimes it's better to change the chain & cassette at the same time, the reason for this is because the chain could wear the cassette

How many gears have you got? SSAM and shimano are the two main makes and both brands work with the other's gears (so you can have an sram chain with shimano cassette) Things to consider are to make sure you get a chain than matches the number of cogs on the (back-9 speed cassettes need a narrower chain than 6 speed) and the quality of the chain. Higher 'quality' usually means it will last a little longer and is a bit lighter. Shimano chains are numbered like HG70: HG is hyperglide but it's not that important. The number is the quality-higher generally better. SSAM chains are numbered like PC990. PC is the design, generally can be ignored for general use like shimano. The first number the the speed of the chain (9=9 speed) and the last two are the quality (higher generally better) High end SRAM Chains have options for hollow pins etc. Which saves a few grams if you're into that kind of thing. SRAM chains come with a magic link to connect both ends and allows it to be disconnected. Shimano give you a special connecting pin to make a more permanent join. I think the HG70 is roughly the same quality as the PCx90. Some people say the SRAM chains Shift gear better but i've not really noticed much difference. SRAM chains say on the back of the box which chains work well with which chainsets, but in reality as long as it's the right width it will do the job, just maybe not as smooth or as quietly. (feel free to correct-i've typed than on my phone and it's well past bedtime!) My personal choice is the SRAM 990 the middle priced one The magic links are invaluable and they last a reasonable amount of time with me. For buying advice, shop around to see who has what you want on offer. Some places do deals if you buy more than 1 chain. Buying a second hand chain is probably best avoided!
