I've noticed on my new Stumpjumper FSR that on tight bends and switchbacks, i turn to a certain degree then its as if the wheel will suddenly keep turning and almost throw me off the bike. Any idea how i can retify this? Would a shorter stem help? Its got a 90mm stem, while my Rockhopper has a 75mm stem and never has this problem

It certainly sounds like the front wheel's "tucking" somewhat. That's symptomatic of pushing the front too hard and having your weight over the front. Maybe try swapping your stems and moving your weight a little further back when you turn.
It's all about striking the balance with your weight distribution, too far forward and you'll find it lets go with a "tuck" and too far back results in the classic washout.

Ressurecting an old post here:
Would 15mm shorter stem really make that much of a difference? 15mm is bugger all really I never got round to swapping the stems over before i sold my Rockhopper to try it, so it'll mean going out and buying one.
Admittedly i haven't been on the bike for a while to try messing with my positioning. But i cant see adjusting my "attack postion" being easy. its how i've always ridden
