I've just bought a new road bike which came without pedals.
All my mountain bikes have shimano mtb pedals and my shoes the corresponding cleats
I've got my eye on some shimano 105 pedals for my new roadie, the question is will my mtb cleats work ok with these?

No mtb cleats are different to road cleats (spd-sl type). Cleats usually come with the pedals.

As Dyls has said, you will need different cleats, and in reality a seperate pair of shoes for the road bike. More money to spend

or you could just fit MTB pedals to the roadie as a reminder not to drift too far to the dark side

I just use mtb spuds on my boardman, if you are a full time roadie then there prob are minor benefits of road specific pedals but i prefer to be able to use all my mtb shoes on my roadie to

I think you can get shoes that will take both sorts of cleats, but you'd have to keep swapping them over which would be a lot of hassle. SPDs (usually) have the benefit that you can walk quite easily in the shoes because the cleat is recessed. Not all road shoes/cleats let you do this. I'd say stick the MTB SPD pedals on it, otherwise you'll be shaving your legs before you know it

All's I done with mine was to put my old spd's on the road bike. And as said above, you can still use you 'normal' shoes with no extra outlay on new shoes Bonus.

I changed to SPD's when I found I had to walk up some hills now. Look type cleats are hell to walk in

Blimey! This just shows my lack of knowledge I suppose but I do exactly what Oggy does (as I'm currently trying to get back into riding clip-less on my MTB again) and stuck my old spd pedals on the roadie and put some new'uns on the MTB, both Shimano, so I can get away with using only one pair of shoes There's a credit crunch you know

I use Shimano PD-A520's. They're a road pedal that's built to take the mtb cleat and work an absolute treat with my Northwave boots and Specialized BG shoes. I've been using the same set for the last five years or so and they've handled sportives, multi-day trips and the everyday commute with ease. Cracking bit of kit.

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll stick some mtb pedals on it.
