Hi my son is unfortunately for my bank account is really enjoying his biking and his current bike weighs an absolute ton so I'm looking for something with reasonable front Sus, his current one, well you may as well not bother bless him and light enough so that at least if he has to push he can actually push it up hill instead of it pulling him down hill, you think I'm joking lol !!!! Just thought I'd ask see if anyone had something hanging around in the garage or know of anyone that maybe selling one. Could do with not spending a fortune and scratches etc are not a problem we will just be adding to them

How much are you looking to spend and how tall is he ? I only ask because I built a bike for my lads using a small frame and even with 26" wheels the 12 yr old has been around Llandegla on it without any sketchy moments. I have got a pair of 24" wheels that I might be selling but that's all they are, wheels, so if you're looking for a 24" full bike which he can grow out of then your best bet's probably ebay, pinkbike or gumtree (if you want a nicked one lol) Edit: Depending how much you want to spend Tweeks stock Cube 24" bikes and they might well do you a discount with MBNW shirt on www.tweekscycles.com/Product.do?method=view&n=3285&p=258667&c=215&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Base&utm_campaign=Kids%20Bikes

You could pick up a cheap front sis bike with small frame and discs of the bay then get set of disc 24" wheels of there too until he's a bit older

Hi guys, the problem with eBay etc is that I'm not 100% sure of what I should be looking for so I could end up with worse than he's got knowing my luck and descriptions aren't always great.

Hey Sue, I know the bike you're talking about is indeed heavy and the suspension next to useless, as is the front fork on Zoë's bike. All these kind of bikes (kids) have crappy suspension. The only reason I went for the bike I bought Zoë is that it is an aluminium frame and of good quality, good nick and cheap(ish). The weight saving was the main goal and I have since been looking if you can get fork upgrades for 24" wheels but there doesn't seem to be anything available unless you go for Andy's idea and opt for a small build 26". Zoë's bike is a Specialized Hotrock btw they come in Girly and Boy versions and I have seen a few on EBay.

if the frame is decent and would the fork accept a 1 1/8" fork, if so you could pick up a say 100mm fork for 26 wheel and run a 24" wheel on it with cable disc. you could prob build that up for less then £100 in used parts, likely less
i've got some 100mm suntour XCR forks you could have, you'd just need a wheel, cable disc brake, headset and stem

Have you tried a 15" frame and 26" wheels? Would last longer

I spent ages looking for a bike for Greg when he moved from 20 to 24 inch. I ended up getting a Marin because slightly lighter than other bikes but only by a kilo or so, he only has skinny little legs and races in the go race series.. A lot of people go for the Isla bikes but not cheap and not many second hand. They dont have suspension. All the bikes have the same same suntour suspension, except scott, which is a coil shock which will give about 50 mm of travel. I am trying at moment to source a RST air fork which is what Scott use. Also for the go rave series I am fitting a rigid fork to cut down on weight. If it is just going to be for a bit of trail riding I would have a look at the carrera bikes in Halfords. They do a hardtail with disc brakes. The other son has this and although heavier is a great bike. Also not as expensive as others.http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_729065_langId_-1_categoryId_165602 On special offer at present so down to £190. Also quite a few appear on e-bay. Both the Marin and Carrera have been used on red and black and performed well.
