The theory doesn't really work mate. I use DX SPD's and they're ok for using unclipped if you're struggling somewhere but they're terrible until you clip in. I use the DX's on one bike and normal SPD's on the other and notice no difference in use at all. Could just be me though.

I was thinking more of either clipping in for dh, or using trainers in places like freeride parks on the flat bit of the pedals. Are the dx any good 4 that?

If so i use the same design ones but with the heavier alloy cage, Shimano M545's and i find the same. Imagine would be slippy as hell with a flat soled trainer but might be ok with a grippy spd mountain sole. Good pedals once clipped in though

The plastic cage is used for the DX as it's less likely to snag and I think shimano actually found it more resilient that the ally cage. I don't think you could ride any SPD pedals in trainers though mate, the design of them means there's always part of the cleat mechanism protruding.

I don't htink I could go back to flats now, mind it took me twenty years to decide to try them...
Anyway plastic cages certainly seem to take the knocks better than the alloy ones here.
The platform / spd ones I bought with the hope that I could use trainers etc.. were fine with SPD shoes but useless with anything even resembling a trainer - way to much spd mechanism sticking up. They are *just *about useable with lightweight walking boots - vibram sole kinda thing.
On the road / commute / nipping to shop for a pint of milk bike I have the double sided pedals with spd on one side and flat on the other. They have been so good I'll probably put them on the mtb next time round.

On the letters page of MBR mag someone wrote in with a solution to adapt his Shimano clipless pedals with a platform around them. What he did was remove the screws and springs from the back plate so he could clip in on the front to stop his foot sliding and easily unclip as the back isnt clipped, ideal solution if you have those pedals or don;t want to go to flats. If he wanted to clip in he simly flipped the pedal. Brilliant idea IMO.
