Well another fine day in the best trail center saw a whole bunch of idiots lining up at the start . Little did we know what was in store . I personally only did the 30k which was more than enough for me . Congratulations to those who competed in the 60k .The two distances stayed together for quite a distance then split and then merged at the first feed station and then split again at the end of the Pink Heffer then merged again at the bridge going over to the Tarw Saw Aggs at the start swiftly making his way to the front , unusually Karl was loitering further back ;D along with brother Dave & Gareth . The gun went and Aggs disappeared into the distance and I was swiftly passed by Dave and Gareth closely followed by Karl who then had the cheek to stop for a quick call of nature and then pass me again , I knew I was in for a long day ;D , and then later by Gavin . Both routes were different to last years and certainly the 30k which seems was closer to 35k was harder , but I think for the better as it took in some great pieces of track they didn't use previously especially on the Tarw side which both routes used . The final couple of k can only be discribed as interesting . I finished in about 3hrs 12 min which was only about 10 mins before Matt page did the 60k in . a truly amazing pace . P.S. also met Monster and Emma before the start picking up a Emma's new bike , very nice it is to . Monsters pep talk trying to fire me up for the race obviously didn't work though .

I can honestly say that was the hardest days riding i think i have done in a long time, mud mud mud glorious gloopy mud , sorry ken for passing you twice didnt notice you as the heart rate went through the roof and trying to catch my brother which i eventually did 32k in up a climb that went to the extreme round the corner and it still went up, finally reaching the top the descent was vertical with roots and which i assume everybody walked/climbed down only thing missing was a rope. So me and dave ventured on till he got cramp so being a caring bro left him to it as he would catch me up and he did top of tarw with 2 broken spokes so rest of descents were done a little more gingerly as didnt want the back wheel to collapse . thought we finally got to finish only to be sent round the course they done the welsh xc racing , well the dummy got spat out and teddies thrown as nothing left and all climbing done in gloop and roots. eventually crossed the line 5:58 of pure pain, it made the dyfi feel like a pootle. has it put me off next year ........NO ;D! Got a time to beat now and a serious amount of fitness to catch up on. Only excuse was having a cold the last week but it was still hard. app.strava.com/rides/23574486

I was there on Saturday. I spoke to Ken on the first decent I think (called you Carl at first!?), then much later on when I was much more broken, another MBNW chap missing 2 spokes, riding with his brother I think.
It was the longest Mtb ride I've ever done, but it wasn't so much the distance, but the difficulty, it took about an hour more than expected (6 hours it was I think). The wet bits were very wet, making it difficult to stop - 3 times over the bars was definitely a record for me! Saw plenty of others doing the same though including one guy who went off the side of some steep woodland and was stopped by the only downed tree around, very lucky.
At the time I was definitely thinking, never again, but now I'm not so sure :-).

Yeah one of if not the hardest ride I've ever done too, including the 80km CRC Marathons. The muddy conditions and the lack of any flat bits meant it was very tough going. Thought it would take me 4 hours, and took me 5, HRM said I was beating at around 150 the whole time, what a struggle! One almost down the mountain at the long off camber section along the side of the hill and one incident where a tree jumped out at me connecting the shoulder were the low/highlights. Oh hang on, no, the 5 hours drive home afterwards was! Good challenge, but would have liked a bit more singletrack and less fireroads...oh and never got given me mug by anyone!

Just robbed these pics from Uncle Ken's facebook page I think the second one gives you some idea of how tough it was. Either that, or old age is catching up with him ;D Much respect
