Was thinking about getting the lad some clip in pedals for next birthday. Only had shimano clip ins but was thinking about getting some crank bros eggbeaters or candy thought the platform might help support foot a bit and help with engagement. Heard that crank bros have a bit more movement in them and easier to release from. Is this true, any thoughts?

Shimano's can be adjusted to very slack and the platform style does support the foot. I use them on both mtb and road bikes (have to walk a little more these days)

Never seen a Shimano pedal break on the trail. Can't say the same about eggbeaters.

You can pick up a pair of Shimano's for about £20, they come with cleats. Crank Bros require you to buy the cleats separately. I've tried both, and have stuck with the Shimano, but that could be my personal choice, I know people who hate Shimano and swear by Crank Bros...

Never seen a Shimano pedal break on the trail. Can't say the same about eggbeaters. I had an axle shear on a set of Shimano XT M785. Luckily I was near a bike shop. The pedals were less than a year old and Shimano replaced them under warranty. Unlucky, since I've ridden with SPD's for years on all my bikes and had no other problems. Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using proboards

well conclusion seems to be stick with Shimano. Well I might have a pair kicking around that i may need to upgrade and hand down the used ones down. ;D Must admit not seen many people around with crank bros has just heard that easier to release from and more movement, given only ten wanted to make release nice an easy so as to build confidence. Now just got to find shoes in a size 3.

Oggy might still have some DX's in the for sale section. Heavier than a normal XC pedal but a big enough platform that you can ride unclipped pretty much as well as clipped whilst learning to use them which is great for hillstarts.
