Never had knee problems before but tightened up my cleats before an 60 mile road ride sunday before last and Was getting quite Severe pain on the outside of my knee by 40 miles. A combination of Man flu and a holiday abroad have kept Me of the bike till today but within 7miles my knee Was painfull again

Does this Sound Familiar to anyone?
Ps I backed the cleats of as Soon as I felt the pain 2 weeks ago

Sounds like a similar or the same pain I had a while ago and basically cured it by resting it. Reckon the cause was most likely ill fitted cleats on the road-bike at first and then the pain transferred itself onto the MTB too. Have since fiddled with the cleat positions on the road-bike (but don't ride it as often) and got it a lot better and kicked the cleats into touch completely on the MTB and ride flats. The pain was quite excruciating and forced me to ride with my good leg for a bit and let the sore one dangle! Tightening the cleats will have probably reduced the bit of float you had prior.
I had that pain last year- one of the cleats was slightly out of the right position- I've got to say it was the most excruciating pain I've ever felt. rested it for 2 weeks and tried again, no better , Went to see Tony Jones in Llandudno (physio) sorted it straight away, Gave up the Look cleats and went onto SPDs though. no probs since.
