If im going out for a couple of hours either on a local trail like the Marin or up on the hills behind where I live I dont tend to take a lot, Over the years Ive taken out no end of stuff that i will never use and it just weighs you down. Take a look, the esentials are there, Im just in the middle of adding a small 1st aid kit to it. 1. 2 x 750 ml waterbottles 2. Power gel, try not to use it if I can help it 3. Small Pump with high pressure and high vol settings 4. A good quality multi tool 5. Shower/wind proof Jacket 6. Superpatches 7. Tyre levers 8. Torx set Multi tool. A lot of bolts are changing from allen to torx 9. good old fashion puncture repair kit 10. Spare tube 11. Waist pack to carry it all. I also carry my phone and a couple of quid just incase. I find that I can get away with not carrying a lot because you are never far from the trail centre or home. Oh and cableties can come in handy! I will do the same with what i tend to pack for longer all day rides soon.

I tend to pack pretty much the same but have muesli bars instead of power gel/bars, I tend to rely on just a puncture repair kit instead of carrying a tube (maybe I should carry a tube though).
I also make sure I carry a my camera and jersey if possible.

I find it easier to change a a tube than sit there wasting trail time finding a hole and plugging it, you can always fix the tube when you get home, or when you've stopped for a time on th trail. Have you tried the Park super patches? they are pretty good, just like a sticky plaster for your tube. Rob, I have quite a good first aid kit that I carry on the longer rides, Ive started carrying first field dressings now too after actualy using them regulary on the trails in Cyprus. I do need a smaller one for the shorter rides though.

I've been limited to what i can carry in my small Hydrapak:
Multitool phone Park super patches latex gloves tyre levers tyre pump small flapjack Waterproof jacket strapped on the outside
I can also squeeze my shock pump in with a bit of effort
Now i have my Hydrapak Big Sur i can fit an extra top, larger snacks, more tools and an inner tube - as well as my helmet strapped on the outside

I'd prefer to have spare tube so I think I'll start packing one. As you say it's easier and quicker. I've not tried the superpatches, but they are already on my shopping list.

Carrying a spare tube is the way ahead, and defiantly give the super-patches a go, they're just a small pack the size of a postage stamp and take up no room at all.

I always carry 2 x spare tubes AND the Park super patches. I managed to use all three on one visit to the Marin Trail last year . I use a Camelbak HAWG so have a bit more room to carry stuff, such as - First aid kit Foil survival bag Flask of coffee A spork Small bottle of oil All the gear, no idea
