Just started riding again after many years not getting on a bike (since childhood). Any tips or advice on training or how to get fit for enjoyable riding. I don't want to jump on my bike and be knackered after 2 miles ;D. Also I think I need to stop smoking aswell. All advice is greatly recieved.

The best training for fitness on the bike is simply just getting out on the bike. Obviously do it in small steps and the fitness will come but it will take time. It doesn't matter how long it takes though mate, you'll still enjoy it

Being pretty new to the sport I can confirm the advice above is spot on as its not just fitness its conditioning. I used to really feel the climbs in my lower back for example but just riding means you get stronger all over. The thing that really helped me was I was doing quite a bit of spinning at the gym and still go once a week as its a different probably more intense work out that works well for me I reckon.
Just need to learn how to stay upright and jobs a good un!

Yeah ride the bike as often as you can.
I'd suggest riding every day if you can but not big mileage. Ride to work?

Quickest way to gain fitness is to lose weight (that is if you have it to lose of course), and in your case quit the cancer sticks. Fitness is pretty much sport specific, so if you want to be able to ride further, ride more often and vary the distance. It's not always best to increase your rides in a linear fashion, don't be afraid of having an easier week where you cycle less then you did the week before, likewise a smaller route with less climbs will help build muscle more than endurance. Probably best to get out 1-2 a week at first and then try to build up...

Thanks guys and girls. All advice has been noted and much appreciated. Firstly I think the smokes must go, then the miles need to be cycled.

The one thing not mentioned is a good diet. I'm seriously unfit myself (had 4 years of injury after injury though) so was reading the thread with interest. I did play international level badminton however so learnt a lot about how to get fit from the professionals (nutritionists / sports coaches etc).
Dont forget - proper rest / recovery days is critical so dont overdo things and burn yourself out / injure yourself (like me - riding at the weekend with a trapped nerve!! doh)

I hadn't been cycling for about 8 months due to one thing and another, but still enjoyed a smoke and the occasional pint or two.
I bought a roadie so I could ride to work, only about a 13 mile round trip. Been managing two or three times a week on average and it's improved my fitness no-end. When i started commuting on the bike I had jelly legs and wanted to heave at the top of any hill. There was one particular hill that I just couldn't ride up and always had to push. About 3 weeks ago I managed to conquer it, although it nearly killed me, and since then I can manage it every time and it gets easier and easier. It's immensely satisfying to see the fruits of your labour and the fitter you feel, the more you'll want to give up or at least cut down on your smoking.
Seriously mate, just get out and ride, ride ride.
