You can put most rotors with most brakes so long as you have the correct bracket for the rotor size, preferably the same brand as the rotors you want to run. Different manufacturers use slightly different size rotors from each other that vary a few mm. I've run floating Hope rotors successfully with Shimano and Formula brakes. Sometimes you may have to add a washer or two to the mounting bracket

Big HOWEVER to add to that. Make sure the braking area part of the disc rotor is the same size or larger than the braking area of the brake pads. If the pad is larger than the rotor then as both pads wear they will form a lip and possibly at some point the lips could become that large that they touch when you brake, thereby keeping the pads away from the rotor...not good.
This is also the case for example using 180mm rotors on a caliper designed around 183mm rotors.

If you're unsure sal, take the rotors off and take it to a bike shop and they can put them along a Hope floating rotors and see how they measure up in size.
At least that way you'll be getting the right ones and not ordering over the net, getting the wrong ones and having to send them back.

thanks guys-I've decided to stick to Shimano to save the faff- I like the wavy xt ones so they are the right one s for my brakes anyway-waste of money really as i don't go fast enough to warrant new brakes pretty though ;D

riding the flipping thing is hard enough without adding extra weight- a few extra pounds around the waist are bad enough

Weight near the hub dous not matter that much, the farther out in a wheel weight is saved, grater dynamic reduction results. It makes sense to lighten rims and tyres rather than hubs and rotors. I have a book called The art of wheelbuilding which explains it all. Big brakes look bling
