seismic --- Like tacking through the wind! yes yes! I'm so bugg3red coming towards the top, I find myself doing that a little anyway (the two times that I have tried so far)....but maybe if I did it some more, my bike wouldnt come to a stand still when I stop....hummm. Its a good idea, I shall work it into my strategy as a "I'm bugg3red" back up plan when my bike is starting to slow....see what happens, thanks so much for the advice! Not wanting to wait until Friday so I am going to see if I can set myself to go to bed early enough tonight to give it a go tomorrow morning. This time I am going to not pump it too much at the beginning, and start in 2/6, power it up the first steep bit, then settle down to 2/5 for some low gear peddling, bring it down to 2/4 for the second steep bit and perhaps do a bit of stand up peddling to put a bit of power in (shall see how it feels for such a low gear), and then do the rest which is easy once you get to the Morrisons wall. Shall pause for a moment to gather my thoughts before I start and shift the front and back cogs seperately too. So, we'll see how it goes hey! Thanks everyone for all the advice, wish me luck!

I only needed to stop once!!! I know this is all quite woosy compared to you lot, but for me its a real improvement after three days hey! My thighs werent feeling like they were going to explode at the end either, infact they felt more out of breath in sympathy with my lungs. Before I went up I stopped over the road and looking, traced my strategy up the hill, thinking about ALL of your advise and tips. Started at 3/7 but as soon as it got stiff shifted to 2/6 sitiing down, went down to 2/5 and stood up for a bit of power just before the first steep turn and sat back down again, went down to 2/4 and peddled away, tacking my way up, went down to 2/3 and got passed the first lamp post, continued to go, but then had to stop as I would have gone into a wall (from the tacking). Had a breather for a few seconds, and got back on, stood up peddling to get me going and then cruised the rest of the way up. WELL CHUFT!...its a start hey?! Postives: - I only needed to stop once.
- I followed through with my plans, which you lot helped me with.
- I managed to break the habit of high gears standing up and use my low gears more.
- It felt a lot less hectic this time
- The chain didnt come off!
Things I need to work on: - Although tacking is a good plan, I need to gain more control, because the slower I was going the less control I had over it...and also, it did kind of feel like I was cheating, as by doing that, I am changing the gradient of the hill.
- Thistle, I was talking total crap about my gears...its the other way, I take the back ones down first lol *blushes*....I did suspect I was talking crap to try and make myself look good when I saw your post, but wanted to wait and see what I did this morning to find out...to me at the time though, it would make more sense to take the big one down first, but it doesnt feel right on my bike...but if you say it doesnt matter then its all good. Anyway, that was one thing I didnt do, seperate my gear changing by any great measure...I was a little scared to, incase it didnt work or something happened as I was doing so well, but this morning it didnt seem to matter...I should just get them looked at properly hey!
- I need to make time, and find balls to do it twice, shall probably do that for the next few goes.
Any tips or thoughts about the tacking (zig zagging)? Am I cheating? Are there any things I should think about whilst doing it that I can use to get it more controlled? (...other than practice?) Thanks everyone, this is really cool! xxx edit: too much information lol.

I gather that the gradient of this hill is steeper than 12%. Apart from damaging your knees it will only give you power over short distances; mix in some endurance climbs like the Llanberis pass etc. Zig zgging is ok if there is no traffic.

scrappy123 --- wonder whether the comfortableness doing stand up peddling is because our bodies are a different shape from guys...I would be interested to see how a guys technique were to change over the space of a month, if he wore a bra with some bags of flour in? Anyone up for the challenge? lol...seriously, I am interested hehe....movement. ;D now that would be interesting there is nothing worse than doing a nice jump and having your airbags go off ;D Good sports bra is a must ;D ;D Don't laugh lads, but have any of you ever had nipple rash from biking ? Use vasaline on long trips now, works a treat You need to hook up with OldBird, she managed to sort out Karls nipples on the recent Glentress trip, she's good like that! I'm planning on getting some emery cloth and a bunsen burner to my nipps for the forum ride just so I can get 'the treatment' from Oldbird

Is this post a wind up (I 'm always the last to know : Maybe thats the answer. A wind up bike. Could be powered only by the power of a large p!ss take, would be ideal for forum rides Or by a very large key and a spring. Not so much fun but probably more useful in the real world.

All good advise. But just enjoy your biking and don't get too fixated on one aspect. It will all come in time. Mix things up a bit.

By trying and trying you may not notice but you will be getting fitter each time. Spinning or keeping a high cadence is generally easier than riding 'out of the saddle'. Try your lowest gear from the start with just enough speed to keep you upright. This will take longer but hopefully you wont have to stop. I admire you're determination. Dont give up .
