We've parked at the Marin carpark on numerous occasions and have never paid (no meters), nor have we ever had a ticket. Having said that, I would be only too willing to pay if there was an honesty box or the like (similar to Penmachno). But as there isn't

Good to know. I don't mind paying, but I don't want to get caught out for not realising we had to.

We've parked at the Marin carpark on numerous occasions and have never paid (no meters), nor have we ever had a ticket. Last time I bought a ticket there I put my £1 in, it whirred and fizzed then a red light came on saying out of order and it gave me my £1 back. That was over 2 years ago (I think it was a forum ride). Since then I've had a permit so haven't needed to pay - so I've never noticed the machine is missing. If they put barriers across the car park (like at Moel Famau) they'd make a fortune out of all the dodgy dealings that go on there when it gets dark.

May be riding the Marin tomorrow. We'll see what the weather's like, and how knackered I'm feeling.

You could park at hafna mine if you wanted, saves a bit of climbing at the start and leave it till the end. Or go up the tarmac road near ty hull and start there.

Unfortunately I have to drop my girlfriend at uni in Bangor at 10am so by the time I get back home and grab my kit and then head to Flint it'll be well past 11. I'm almost definitely coming on the forum ride on Saturday though, which I'm looking forward to, and looking forward to meeting people. Hope you guys have fun.

Did that the first time i rode there by accident, saving that first climb to the end was an absolute KILLER on my legs! Best to get it out of the way first, it's by far the worst one, IMO.

Just thinking what with the Forest Commission laying off, it's not looking too rosy for trail maintenance, never mind trail upgrades/ building. Does any one remember when the trail last had work done to it, because I think it's falling apart and getting rougher every season. It may come to the point where we may have to take the maintenance into our own hands to keep our local trail ship shape, and SAFE to use!

It may well get that way, in which case, i'd be up for volunteering to keep the trails nice.

Both Oggy and I have spoken to the current ranger (some time ago, I even suggested us sorting out all the insurance, man power and admin if they supplied the know how) and he wasn't keen on anyone helping out and at the time was looking into getting fund which I guess nothing has come of it, unless they blew it all on the nice new fencing in the car parks. It's a really shame because a lot of trails have maintenance days by the locals and I am sure we could get a few people together to help out a couple of days a year.

Maybe just go up one weekend and 'improve' a couple of bits I think Cannock and Gisburn have gangs of trail pixies and it seems to work quite well, but they seem to be building rather than maintaining at the moment. Penmachno was built by trail pixies but I don't know if they still carry out any maintenance on it.

It's a pity really as the Marin could well do with some tlc and with these cuts in funding happening I can't really see any maintenance soon. I'm pretty sure Glentress trailfaires was set up to assist in the running/maintenance up there.
However I don't know how it would stack up with current H&S legislation, ie I would assume that we would have to pass some competence 'trail maintenance' assessment before being unleashed onto the trail. Maybe the FC don't even have the money for this type of training at this moment.

With the lack of funding I can see most of our local trails getting so rough/dangerous that most mtbers will stay away. Lack of traffic will then make them overgrown (eg. Penmachno at certain times of the year!), then they could just whither up & die, without some help from interested parties.

Do we have a contact address for the ranger or the powers that govern the trail?
I'm wondering if we put a good case forward and offer the time as a formal group rather than random individuals, if that would be enough for them to sit-up and take notice.
At the end of the day if they can get the trail maintained for free and to a good standard then they haven't got much to moan about.
