The lights on your helmet could be quite heavy, depending on the lights, when I get mine I will tape them to my helmet and let you know.

For me both, for road use, UK law stipulates that bicycle lights need to be attached to the actual bike, but for off-road our money says a head mounted lamp is definitely the way forward, used either alone or along with a handlebar mounted one. If lamps are mounted too low, the merest bump in the trail can create a large pool of shadow that could be concealing anything. What's more, on twisty singletrack, the handlebars are not always pointing in the direction that you want to look in. Helmet mounted lights get around these problems, and are also a great boon when trailside repairs are required. As an added bonus, because they attach to you, rather than your bike, there is great scope for cross-over usage, be that adventure racing or crawling under the floorboards looking to fix that draught. The only downside with head-mounted lights comes when it is foggy or snowing; in these conditions the light scatters off particles close to the eyes, and it can be difficult to see the ground ahead. In these conditions, a back-up handlebar lamp can be very useful.

Id say both, ive been riding with just bar mounted and do need to get a helmet mounted when ive got some more cash, bar mounted are great but its nice to be able to see where you are looking rather than were the bike is pointing, it;s been no great drama just reckon i will be able to go faster when i get a proper helmet Joby.
Ive go a single mi newt on the bars at the moment and really fancy a joystick for the helmet as they are unbelievably small for there power output

Now thats a hard desision, i would say have a look at the exposure joysticks for the helmet, the basic one is 150 i think and is more than powerful enogh comes with both bar and helmet mounts, i wrote them off as being over priced until i saw one in the flesh the other week. Oneplanet have them in the shop if you want a look at one, they also said they are getting the hope range in to. Also if you want a look at niterider light range i think lightspeed in betws are getting there full range in, think they should be in the shop by now.

I'm tempted with the joystick for the helmet as well, like the idea of an all in one unit with no wires.

The thing is tiny and as you say its all in one and its got a really long burn time to. Got my heart set on one now, wiggle and chain reaction both have them for 145 but are out of stock

Yeah I'm going to give the hopes one trail ride by themselves first to see what they are like before dispensing the cash - but if I do its the joystick I'll go for.

Joystick all the way for me. Love mine to bits and allows me to get out on the trail for 6 months of the year when I wouldn't be able to. Thinking of getting the MaxxD for my bars as well though, don't think you can have too much light. As for having a lamp on just the bars I'm sure it's fine for general riding but if you want to go quick it's next to useless. You can't see your intended destination as you're stuck looking at your immediate trail and as we all know kids, the ability to go fast is all down to your ability to "make space" for yourself in your head. Impossible if you can't see.

The latest one in black (one piece with cooling rings at the front.).
Bloody brilliant and you're welcome to have a go of it if you need to try one?

As for having a lamp on just the bars I'm sure it's fine for general riding but if you want to go quick it's next to useless. I agree (for once ;D ). I ride with a relatively cheap set of lights on the bars (5W and 10W Halogens) and a petzl head torch. I would go without the bar lights but not the head torch. You really need to be able to scope the trail and plan your next step. Bar lights don't allow you to do that. Hopefully I will be upgrading the head torch this winter, but I need to start saving first
