Well the nights are really drawing in now, ive done 2 rides this week that have been dark, damp and generally a bit depressing. I was wondering what people will be doing to keep there fitness up over the winter months. Ill still be doing a full day ride each weekend and one off road night ride a week but i carnt decide what else to do. Ive used the gym the last few years but quit over this summer so i could concentrate more on cycling, i tend to fall in to just pushing weights in the gym as static bike and runners are boring as hell. Could spinning and little gym work be the answer What will you guys and gals be doing?

What will you guys and gals be doing? Mainly drinking beer and eating crisps, i find the extra layer of fat keeps me warm. The work health challenge is running until 1/12, so that will keep me motivated until then, after that I'm gonna try to keep it going, two rides to Chester and back a week plus at least one outing in themud to keep me smiling. I tend to be quite committed, if I decide that i'm riding to work tomorrow, then i'll be annoyed with myself if I don't, so I'm riding to work tomorrow! I'm keen to up the off road milage as that is a better work out than 24 miles on the roadbike, so a few trips around the Clwyds/marin/penmachno are on the cards. Especially now I have the trek, without doubt, the best bike i own ;D

For me it'll be the same as its been for the last few years So, to get out once a fortnight if I'm lucky (bloody kids!) But what did help my fitness last winter (and you're gunna love this Oggy), was to get a good days ride on the road bike ;D. That way stamina was increasing with every ride. But on the other hand, the skills (if any) weren't kept up I did buy an indoor trainer last november and only used it about 7 times But I'll try and use that more this winter with the help of some (shh) downloadable tacx cycling video's which do make it a little less boring

But on the other hand, the skills (if any) weren't kept up Hmm, i have thought about it m8, and almost did buy one a few weeks back, but really its the wet dark winters nights that i need to fill. I will be doing some epic winters rides and at least one week day night ride but its just not possible to go out and get muddy 4 times and night riding can get pretty depressing. Its defo a lot easier to get a fast blast in on a road bike than on a MTB. I have been using the mtb to do a weekly 30km road ride but its hammering my tyres and wearing out my expensive parts so perhaps a road bike would be a good investment Fancy some summittoppler winter epics

I'm going to be doing a bit of everything I hope. Plan is to get in some long endurance building rides at the weekend and continue my usual speed/strength stuff before/after work in the week. I'm going to have a proper go at it as long as I can stop slacking off to play boats every weekend. Gym work is good for building leg strength but it's not going to transfer directly to the bike. Spinning classes look like the future to me mate. A bit of wakeboarding should help build those spindly little legs a bit as well. ;D

I'm seriously trying to resist buying a turbo trainer, although when I was with Newark castle CC we did group turbo training at the clubhouse. Everyone brought along their own bike and trainer/rollers and people took it in turns to take the class. Sometimes we booked a cycling coach if we wanted a proper mad session or if anyone wanted to do a max heart rate test. Would anyone here be up for something like that?

circuit classes, allover body workout! spinning is a good idea thinking of doing that myself. i always do one half hour to hour long jog a week just to use some different muscles and build stamina. if you do end up falling into the weights just do some cycle specific weight exercises, maybe for improving explosive leg strength or chest tri and bi,s need to be in good nick for mtbing, hi reps low weight, i find that hard though when the bloke next to me has got bigger plates on his bar and thinks i,m a big girl with my little dumbells! boxing training is a cracking work out also, you dont have time to get bored, and it trains your fast twitch muscles, just a couple of suggestions among plenty of others!
