While my bike is in bits about to get a rebuild, I am thinking of getting a new paint job, Dan has provided me with a good paint shop to do it for me, but the guy says I will save a packet if I striped the exsisting paint myself, any tips on how to do this. ( I know I need paint stripper .

do you have to strip all the paint off just sand down the existing paint, unless the original paint is flaking off... dont see the point taking it down to the alloy.

Nitromors, a 2" paintbrush and an old butter knife did the trick with mine mate. Takes a little while though. A Wire brush will also help you get the paint out of the nooks and crannies but you'll need safety goggles for this. Don't forget some latex gloves (the ones out of your bondage kit should be fine), an old jumper and trousers because the Nitromors is seriously caustic stuff. Hope that helps, happy stripping.

Dan - What are the details of the spray shop you used, for the bike not your spray on tan Is it paint on your vp or powder coat. If it's paint, how tough would you say it is. Any chips yet. Did they sand blast before the spray. Did you have the bearings in or out. If out how did you stop the paint building up in the housing and the b/b threads. Cheers

Cheers Funnily enough I've had this chat with shady ady today. ;D J&S racepaint are the boys for paint, best paint in North Wales (no seriously, their work is incredible). Number is 01248 600150 and you need to ask for Steve. The paint seems pretty durable in fairness but then white doesn't show chips anyway. Powdercoat will be more durable but the finish won't be as good and it's more expensive. I did all the prep work which was a bitch, lots of Nitromors and burning skin to get the old powdercoat off then I beadblasted the whole lot with a fine silica media to leave a perfect bare metal finish. Doing the prep work yourself will save you a fair few £'s. Frame was totally bare and they masked every bearing face and thread without me asking. They're pretty switched on. Hope that helps ya pasty fecker!

Where can I get my frame blasted, I know you have to be careful as it could wreck the frame if the sand blasting is to harsh.

Ady, there's a company called Celtic Coatings at Griffiths Crossing near Caernarfon that also do bead blasting and powder coating, they're quite reasonable on price and do some very tidy work.
Dave, J&S really are the bollocks when it comes to spraying bikes, forks, etc. I was absolutely delighted with the results on my fork. The paint job and lacquer were flawless. They do a lot of motorbikes and pushbikes and like Dan says, they know the score when it comes to masking etc
